The 8×6 ft is the smallest wooden greenhouse we make, and the most popular for typical UK side returns, allotment plots, and "I want to grow seriously but don't have space" gardens. NORDIC-S at £1,499 is the entry-point to the NORDIC range — same Swedish pine from sustainably-managed forests, same 1.2 mm galvanised steel joints, same screw-fixed CrystalLight panels as the £1,899 NORDIC-XXL — just shorter.

This page covers what an 8×6 ft wooden greenhouse actually fits, who it's right for, and how NORDIC-S compares to the bigger sizes in our range.

Who needs an 8×6 ft greenhouse?

Three buyer types, in our customer reports:

The first-allotment grower. You've just got the keys to a half-plot. You want a greenhouse that fits, doesn't take up the whole plot, and gives you tomatoes / peppers / autumn salads without committing to a 3×3 m structure that the committee will side-eye. NORDIC-S fits comfortably on a half-plot.

The "tight side return" gardener. UK terraces, semi-detached houses, narrow gardens. Your only sunny spot is a 7-8 ft wide strip down the side of the house. NORDIC-S at 8 ft long × 6 ft wide tucks in there.

The patio-grower upgrading from cold frames. You've outgrown the cold frame on the patio but a 8×10 ft (NORDIC-M) is more garden than you want to give up. NORDIC-S as a permanent patio structure works.

The honest pre-purchase question: will I regret going small? The answer is "sometimes, in year 3." That's why we recommend reading What Size Greenhouse Do I Need? before committing — if you can fit 8×10 ft, you'll usually be glad you did.

Real 8×6 ft layout — what fits inside

Internal area: ~4.5 m² (allowing for frame thickness).

Single-bench layout:

  • One staging bench along the long (8 ft) wall — about 1.8 m × 0.6 m
  • Working strip on opposite side (~0.6 m wide path)
  • Small ground bed at one end (~0.6 m × 1.5 m)

Two-bench layout (tighter):

  • Two staging benches face-to-face along long walls
  • Narrow central path (~0.4 m — tight for two adults)
  • No ground bed

What actually fits:

  • 6-8 indeterminate tomato plants on canes up the long wall
  • Plus 2-3 peppers / chillies in the corner
  • Plus seed-starting trays on the staging bench
  • Plus 1-2 large pots of cucumbers near the door

Two adults can work inside, just. One adult plus a wheelbarrow doesn't fit. If you want to grow tall canes (cordon tomatoes, climbing beans), the 8×6 ft NORDIC-S works — the 7 ft eaves give clearance to the cane tops.

How 8×6 compares to other NORDIC sizes

Size Internal area Best for Price
NORDIC-S 8×6 ft 4.5 m² Patio / starter / half-plot £1,499
NORDIC-M 8×10 ft 7.5 m² Family veg garden from £1,599
NORDIC-L 8×13 ft 9.7 m² Serious grower from £1,699
NORDIC-XL 8×16 ft 11.9 m² Year-round multi-crop from £1,799
NORDIC-XXL 8×20 ft 14.9 m² Walk-in / market grower from £1,899

The £100 step from NORDIC-S to NORDIC-M doubles your usable bench surface (4.5 m² → 7.5 m²). It's the most asked-about upgrade decision in our pre-sales.

Materials and engineering

The 8×6 ft NORDIC-S is engineered to the same standard as every larger size in the range:

  • 45×45 mm Swedish pine from sustainably-managed forests frame — same cross-section across all five sizes
  • 1.2 mm galvanised steel at every joint — not 0.8 mm, not painted aluminium
  • Screw-fixed 4 mm CrystalLight polycarbonate — continuous wrap, no horizontal eaves seam
  • Heavy-duty Ground Anchors — hammer into firm soil, no concrete pad needed
  • Continuous glazing wrap — single panels run from base of sidewall over apex to opposite base

Assembly: 1 weekend, 2 adults

NORDIC-S is the smallest assembly in our range. Real customer reports: two adults, one Saturday afternoon to most of Sunday morning — typically 6-8 working hours.

Tools needed: cordless drill, spirit level, step-ladder (just), two 13 mm spanners.

What ships in the kit:

  • All timber pre-cut and numbered
  • All steel joint plates pre-drilled
  • All polycarbonate panels numbered
  • Heavy-duty Ground Anchors and fixings
  • Illustrated step-by-step guide with QR-coded build videos

Solo assembly is possible but tight on the roof panels — you'll want help for the last 30 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is 8×6 the same as 6×8?

Yes. UK manufacturers vary in which dimension is the "long wall" in their naming. NORDIC-S is 8 ft long × 6 ft wide — the door is on the 6 ft (short) wall.

Will an 8×6 greenhouse fit on my allotment?

Almost certainly. The half-plot is typically 5×10 m (~250 ft²), and NORDIC-S takes up about 13.5 ft² of footprint. Always check your allotment association rules — some prohibit concrete bases (Heavy-duty Ground Anchors solve this).

Can I grow tomatoes in an 8×6 ft greenhouse?

Yes — 6-8 indeterminate cordon tomatoes up canes, plus 2-3 peppers, plus seed-starting trays, plus 1-2 cucumbers. That's a serious year of food.

Do I need a concrete base for NORDIC-S?

No — Heavy-duty Ground Anchors hammer into firm soil and hold the frame against UK winter storms. Concrete is fine if you want permanence; anchors are better for allotment / future flexibility.

What's the maximum wind it'll survive?

Engineered for British storm conditions: 1.2 mm steel joints + screw-fixed panels + Heavy-duty Ground Anchors will hold to 80+ mph gusts if anchored properly. We don't claim "heavy-duty" — we describe construction.

How long does NORDIC-S last?

20-30 years with maintenance (re-treat timber every 2-3 years). Polycarbonate panels last 15-20 years before UV haze becomes noticeable.

Should I buy the 8×6 or upgrade to 8×10?

If you can fit 8×10 ft, the £100 extra usually rewards itself within two seasons. If 8×10 won't fit, 8×6 is a serious greenhouse, not a compromise. See What Size Greenhouse Do I Need? for the full size decision framework.
