Stove and flueNo heater circuit needed. The flue kit is in the price and fits during assembly.
  • The stove stands in the hot-room corner by the partition, in its stone guard; the firebox passes through the side wall, so you feed it from outside.
  • A 400 × 700 mm opening is cut in the side wall during assembly, with heat shields inside and outside and a stove stand. All of it is drawn in the assembly manual.
  • Flue kit supplied: flue pipe, damper, a twin-wall section through the roof, the ceiling plate, roof flashing, a clamp and the rain cap.
  • If your address is in a smoke control area, burning wood can be restricted. Check with your council before you order, or send us your postcode.

1Site and planning

Will it work where you live?

Four checks, all before you pay. The first one is the one that stops people.

  1. In a smoke control area wood may only be burnt on an appliance on Defra’s exempt list.
In a smoke control area wood may only be burnt on an appliance on Defra’s exempt list.
    Smoke control

The check that stops people. In a smoke control area you may not burn wood on this stove, and all of Greater London is one. Put your postcode into the check below before anything else.

  2. The flue and its rain cap on the shingle roof, at the works.
The flue and its rain cap on the shingle roof, at the works.
    The flue and next door

The flue rises through the roof above the hot room. Site the cabin so smoke clears windows and doors, yours and your neighbours’, and keep the fire-door wall clear for feeding the stove and a dry log store.

  3. The footprint to scale on a garden plot, with the 2 m band along the boundary.

    Space and planning

It covers 3.4 × 2.2 m (7.5 m²) and stands about 2.2 m tall, under the 2.5 m limit for building within 2 m of a boundary. In most gardens in England and Wales it counts as permitted development, so you won’t need planning permission. Conservation areas, listed buildings, flats, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own rules: check yours on the Planning Portal.

  4. From the kerb to your base: the crate is set down on hard standing and the parts carried through.
From the kerb to your base: the crate is set down on hard standing and the parts carried through.
    Getting it into the garden

One crate, 3.4 × 1.2 × 1 m, set down at the kerb. If it cannot go further, it is opened there and the parts carried through, so walk the route from the road to the spot: gate, corners, steps.

Before you order

Can you burn wood at your address?

Councils declare smoke control areas street by street, and this stove is not on Defra’s exempt-appliance register. Put your postcode in and we will tell you which council decides, then check the exact address with them before anything is built.

There is no national map of these areas: each council declares its own, street by street, so your council is the only place that can confirm it. Defra publishes the register of exempt appliances, and this stove is not on it. We check your address with the council either way.

Not sure about the spot? Send a photo and your postcode on WhatsApp and we will look at it with you.

2Layout and seats

Will six fit, and will it be comfortable?

Six seated on two heights, with a changing room between the heat and the garden.

  1. 1Made for you

The factory builds your cabin to order, about ten days, then it goes into transit.

  2. 2The day is booked

Our carrier calls to agree the day. If the date changes, we let you know.

  3. 3At the kerb

The crate is set down on the nearest safe hard standing, driveway or road, not grass. The driver does not carry it into the garden.

  4. 4Check before you sign

Photograph any damage before you sign, then count the parts against the packing list. Tell us within 14 days and we replace the part free, delivery included.

The last twenty metres

The crate stops at the kerb. Opened there, it comes out as boards, three frames, two doors in their frames, benches, the roof parts and the stove and flue kit. Plan for two people and a sack truck, and walk the route first: a side gate, a corner, a step.

The longest parts are the wall and roof boards; the end frames are nearly as wide as the cabin.

Delivery charge

Delivery to most of the UK mainland is in the price; a few areas, the Scottish Highlands among them, carry a surcharge shown before checkout. Put your postcode in to see yours.

5Assembly

Can we build it ourselves?

Yes: two people, ordinary tools and a manual that draws every step. Read all of it before you order.

37 pages: every part listed by code, every step drawn. On-site assembly is not included: you, or someone you hire, build it from this.

Ten stages, two people, every step in the manual. Download the assembly guide (PDF).

The base: firm, level, draining

The cabin stands on four runners, 195 cm long, laid across its width. Make the base the size of the footprint, 340 × 220 cm, no larger: a slab that sticks out past the walls holds rain against them. The floor drain empties under the cabin: on gravel it soaks away; on a slab or paving, leave a gravel-filled gap under the drain so the water can get away.

  • Concrete slabThe firmest base, and it stays level longest.
  • Paving slabsOn a compacted bed, laid level to the size of the footprint.
  • Compacted gravelWell compacted and levelled, with free drainage beneath.

7Care and upkeep

Will it leak, rot or go mouldy?

Not if the outside is treated, the roof stays sealed and the room is dried after each session.

  • The outside walls, shown with a finish applied for the pictures.
The outside walls, shown with a finish applied for the pictures.
    Treat the outside

It arrives untreated. Before its first winter, treat the outside walls with an exterior wood finish of your choice, from the base up to 1.6 m as the manual shows. The inside stays bare.

  • Shingles on the curved roof and the flashing round the flue.
Shingles on the curved roof and the flashing round the flue.
    Keep the roof sealed

The shingles are nailed in overlapping rows; bitumen sealant closes the flue flashing, the ridge and the roof edges. Look them over each spring: that is where rain would find a way in.

  • Two vents in the back wall, one high and one low.
Two vents in the back wall, one high and one low.
    Dry it after every session

Leave both doors ajar and the two vents open until the room is dry. The drain empties under the cabin, so keep the ground beneath it free-draining.

  • A strap tensioner on the side wall.
A strap tensioner on the side wall.
    Check the straps

Timber moves with the seasons. Check the four straps after the first month and then each spring, and tighten them with two spanners.

  • The fire door, opened from outside the cabin.
The fire door, opened from outside the cabin.
    The stove and the flue

Burn dry, seasoned logs only, fed through the fire door outside. Clear the ash from outside too, and have the flue swept at least once a year.

  • Rarely used, or over winter

Air it on a dry day every few weeks with the vents open, and clear snow and leaves off the roof.

Questions people ask

Is six people realistic?

Yes, seated. Three along the upper bench, which runs 211 cm across the back wall, and the rest on the side bench and the lower tier. The lower tier also works as a step and a footrest, so the people above are not sitting with their feet in cooler air. One person can lie full length on the upper bench.

Can I burn wood at my address?

Check first. Councils declare smoke control areas street by street, and all of Greater London is one. There you may only burn wood on an appliance on Defra’s exempt list, and this stove is not on it. Put your postcode into the check in Your address, or send it to us and we will look it up with your council. If wood is out, the electric edition of this cabin needs no flue.

Do I need planning permission?

Garden buildings are usually permitted development in England and Wales; this cabin covers 7.5 m². Height near a boundary, conservation areas, listed settings, flats, Scotland and Northern Ireland all change the answer. Check the Planning Portal and your council before you order.

Does the stove need building control?

In England and Wales, fitting a stove and flue is building work under Part J: notify building control, or use an installer registered with a competent-person scheme. The manual gives the wall opening, the heat shields, the ceiling plate and the roof pass-through, so your installer can see all of it before you order.

Will rain get in?

Rain runs off a roof of nailed bitumen shingles, sealed at the flue, the ridge and the edges with bitumen sealant as the manual shows. Look the sealant over each spring and keep the outside walls treated: those are the places water would find a way.

Should I tell my home insurer?

Yes. A garden building of this value often sits above the outbuildings limit on a standard policy, and insurers expect to be told about a building with a wood-burning stove. One call before delivery.

Where in the garden should it go?

Close to the house: you walk back from it in a towel. Face the glass doors to the fence or the house, not the street. Leave room to walk round it, to reach the straps and to stand at the fire door, and keep a covered log store nearby.

What does the stove burn?

Dry, seasoned logs, fed through the fire door outside the cabin, so logs and ash stay out of the hot room. It needs no heater circuit.

Can I use it through a British winter?

Yes. It is an outdoor cabin. The jobs that matter first are the exterior treatment before its first winter and the strap check after the first month. Keep the logs dry and have the flue swept at least once a year.

What exactly is it made of?

Solid timber boards for the floor, walls and roof, timber benches, and two glass doors in timber frames. No glued sandwich panels and no PIR boards anywhere in the build. It ships untreated: the exterior finish is yours to choose.

Electric or wood-fired?

Same cabin. Wood-fired needs no heater circuit, but has a flue through the roof, is fed from outside the cabin and, in a smoke control area, needs a check with your council. Electric heats on a timer and needs its own circuit from your consumer unit: 35 A for the Harvia PC70. If the flue or the smoke check is the sticking point, look at the electric edition.

Do I need any electrical work?

Not for the heat. The only reason to bring power to the cabin is the LED lighting kit, a small circuit rather than a heater supply; if you add it, it is yours to arrange with a qualified electrician.

Can I take it with me if I move house?

It is designed to be built once. The factory does not provide for taking it down and rebuilding it, so plan the site as permanent.

Will we actually use it?

The honest risk with any sauna is the habit, not the build. Size for the people who will use it every week: six seats suit a family or friends who come round, and a couple will find it roomy. If you have never kept a sauna habit, try a month at a local gym first.

Is a sauna safe for everyone?

We sell the cabin and do not give medical advice. If anyone in the household is pregnant or has a heart or blood-pressure condition, ask a GP before using any sauna. Keep children away from the stove and the fire door.

Who am I buying from?

Waldenhaus Limited, 71-75 Shelton Street, London WC2H 9JQ, Company No. 16877766. We sell garden structures for British weather: greenhouses first, and now saunas we select, document and support.

What are my legal rights?

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies: goods must be as described, of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose. Distance orders carry a 14-day cancellation right under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. These come from the law, whoever you buy from.
