Not in the crate

Six things you arrange yourself.

2 of 4 · Base & site

Your base and the flue

Plan the pad, the route in and the flue before the crate arrives.

Step 1 of 3

Mark out the base

The footprint and the door end.

  • door end 220 cm240 cmx = y
    1. Mark 240 × 220 cmWith the door end facing where you want to walk in.
    2. Check the diagonalsBoth the same length, so the pad is square.
    3. Level the padNo larger than the footprint, with free drainage.

The cabin brings its own floor and base frame: three joists sit on the pad.

Step 2 of 3

Six rules before you build

Read these before the pad goes down.

  • 1Pad the size of the footprint

A slab that sticks out past the wall holds rain against it. 240 × 220 cm, no larger.

  • 2Level and square

The three base joists go down level; measure both diagonals and make them equal before the walls go up.

  • 3Free drainage

A little fall, or free drainage beneath the base, so the floor never sits wet.

  • 4A route in for 2.35 m parts

The crate stops at the kerb. Walk the route to the plot first: side gate, corners, steps.

  • 5Close to the house

You walk back from it in a towel. Face the glass door to the fence or the house, not the street.

  • 6Check planning

Garden buildings are usually permitted development in England and Wales; height, boundary distance, conservation areas and listed settings change the answer. Planning Portal.

Step 3 of 3

Bases you can build

Whichever you choose, keep it level, the size of the footprint, and draining freely.

  • Concrete slab

The firmest base, and it stays level longest.

  • Paving slabs

On a compacted bed, laid level to the size of the footprint.

  • Compacted gravel

Well compacted and levelled, with free drainage beneath.

Smoke Control Areas and the flue

Two checks decide whether you can burn wood at your address.

  • 1Smoke Control Areas

Councils declare them street by street. Put your postcode in below: we tell you which council decides, and we confirm the exact address with them before anything is built. Wood burning in these areas is restricted unless the appliance is on Defra's exempt list.

  • 2The flue and the stove

Building work under Part J in England and Wales: notify building control, or use an installer registered with a competent-person scheme. The manual gives the clearances, the heat shields and the roof pass-through.

Before you order

Can you burn wood at your address?

Councils declare smoke control areas street by street, and this stove is not on Defra’s exempt-appliance register. Put your postcode in and we will tell you which council decides, then check the exact address with them before anything is built.

There is no national map of these areas: each council declares its own, street by street, so your council is the only place that can confirm it. Defra publishes the register of exempt appliances, and this stove is not on it. We check your address with the council either way.

  • Show this to your installer
    • Wood-burning sauna stove, firebox inside the room, glass door; maker's rating 6 to 12 m³; logs up to 400 mm
    • Flue Ø115 mm: single-wall pipe, twin-wall pipe Ø115/195, damper, transition, rain cap, inner and outer heat shields, rosette
    • Roof penetration: flashing 450 × 450 mm, sealed into the shingle roof
    • Stove stand, stone cage and both heat shields supplied; clearances as drawn in the assembly manual
    • Not in the kit: a non-combustible plate under the stove and high-temperature flue sealant
    • Part J, England and Wales: building control notification or a competent-person installer
  • Neighbours and smoke

Burn dry, seasoned wood only; tell the neighbours before the first fire; think about where the flue stands relative to their windows and the wind. Where a garden is tight, that decides between wood-fired and electric. See the electric build.

If something is missing, damaged or breaks

Three things that can go wrong, and what happens next.

Warranty and help

What happens next

Spare parts, not a new cabin.

  • 1Missing or damaged on arrival

Count the parts against the packing list and photograph anything damaged before you sign. Email support@waldenhaus.uk or WhatsApp a photo and your order number, and we send the replacement part.

  • 2A part fails later

Tell us with a photo. We answer within seven working days, and we replace parts, not whole cabins.

  • 3The written warranty

From delivery, on the cabin and everything supplied in the crate: full terms, published before you order. The stove and flue kit are covered by the same written warranty.

Looking after it

Five things, none of them hard.

Before you pay

Your money, before the crate ships

  • Weeks, not months

The factory builds your cabin in about ten days; order to kerb is typically two to four weeks.

  • A photo before dispatch

We ask the works for a photograph of your packed crate with its packing list before it leaves, and pass it on to you.

Delivery

One crate to your kerb. Then the last twenty metres are yours.

Made to order and sent as a single protective crate on a pallet lorry. Read this part before you order, because the route from the road to the plot is the one thing we cannot check for you.

  • 340 × 120 × 100 cmone timber crate, strapped on a pallet
  • From 770 kgthe cabin; the stove and flue add to it, confirmed on the dispatch note
  • 4 pallet spacestoo long for a tail-lift, so it comes on a lorry with its own fork-lift

The lorry

It comes on a lorry with a Moffett fork-lift and is set down at the nearest safe hard-standing: driveway or road, not grass or soft ground. The driver does not carry it into the garden. Our carrier calls to book the day.

After the kerb

The crate opens into wall boards, a door in its frame, benches, roof parts and the stove and flue kit. Plan for two people and a sack truck. The longest parts are 2.35 m, so walk the route to the plot first: a side gate, a corner, a step.

When it arrives

Count the parts against the packing list and photograph anything damaged before you sign. Tell us as soon as you can, and we send the replacement part. Spare parts, not a new cabin: that is how a missing board is solved.

Questions people ask

Is four people realistic?

Yes, seated. Two on each bench, facing each other, with the stove on the back wall between you behind its guard. Each bench is 174 cm long and 55 cm deep, so the same room seats four or lets two lie down. It is a four-person cabin, not a six-person one with the number rounded up.

Do I need planning permission?

Garden buildings are usually permitted development in England and Wales; this cabin covers 5.3 m². Height, distance to a boundary, conservation areas, listed settings, flats, Scotland and Northern Ireland all change the answer. Check the Planning Portal and your council before you order.

Should I tell my home insurer?

Yes. A garden building of this value often sits above the outbuildings limit on a standard policy, and insurers expect to be told about a heated garden building. One call before delivery.

Where in the garden should it go?

Close to the house: you walk back from it in a towel. Face the glass door to the fence or the house, not the street; the matt-glass door option keeps the room private with the light on. Leave room to walk round it and to reach the straps.

Can I use it through a British winter?

Yes. It is an outdoor cabin and the stove is rated for the room. The two jobs that matter first are the exterior treatment before the first season and the strap check after the first month. Keep the logs dry and the chimney swept.

What does the stove burn?

Dry, seasoned logs up to 400 mm. Keep a covered log store near the cabin. The stove needs no heater circuit.

What exactly is it made of?

Solid timber boards for the walls, alder for the benches and backrests, an 8 mm toughened glass door. No glued sandwich panels and no PIR boards anywhere in the build. It ships untreated: the exterior finish is yours to choose.

Can I take it with me if I move house?

It is designed to be built once. The factory does not provide for taking it down and rebuilding it, so plan the site as permanent.

Electric or wood-fired?

Same cabin. Wood-fired needs no heater circuit, but does need a flue through the roof and, in a Smoke Control Area, a check with your council. Electric heats on a timer and needs its own 35 A circuit from your consumer unit. If the flue or the smoke check is the sticking point, look at the electric build.

Will we actually use it?

The honest risk with any sauna is the habit, not the build. Size for the people who will use it every week: a four-person room is for a household that sits together, or two people who like to lie down. If you have never kept a sauna habit, try a month at a local gym first.

Is a sauna safe for everyone?

We sell the cabin and do not give medical advice. If anyone in the household is pregnant or has a heart or blood-pressure condition, ask a GP before using any sauna.

Who am I buying from?

Waldenhaus Limited, 71-75 Shelton Street, London WC2H 9JQ. We sell garden structures for British weather: greenhouses first, and now saunas made to our specification.

What are my legal rights?

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies: goods must be as described, of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose. Distance orders carry a 14-day cancellation right under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. These come from the law, whoever you buy from.

Do I need any electrical work?

Not for the heat. The only reason to bring power to the cabin is the lighting kit, a small circuit rather than a heater supply; if you add it, it is yours to arrange with a qualified electrician.
