For most UK greenhouses the workable permanent watering system is a water butt fed from the roof plus a drip line to the borders and pots, with a battery timer where the line runs off the mains. A tomato plant in full fruit can drink between one and two litres a day in high summer. Ten plants and a dry fortnight in July, and you have carried the best part of 200 litres through the garden gate in a can. That arithmetic, repeated across a season, converts most owners to a permanent greenhouse watering system by their second summer.

Five approaches cover almost every UK greenhouse. They differ less in price than in where the effort lands: hand watering takes your evenings, while a drip system takes one careful Saturday of assembly and then mostly looks after itself.

Hand watering keeps a place in every one of these set-ups, because a can in the hand doubles as an inspection round. The RHS advice on watering wisely holds for greenhouses as much as borders: aim water at the base of the plant, and judge dryness by pushing a finger a few centimetres into the compost rather than by looking at the surface. Drip irrigation design basics

A drip system has three parts. A 13 mm supply pipe runs from the tap or butt into the greenhouse, 4 mm spur tubes branch off it, and each spur ends in a dripper that releases water slowly enough for the compost to absorb it. UK kits bundle all three parts with the punch tool.

Emitter spacing does most of the design work. In a soil border, drippers at 30 cm intervals suit most crops, because moisture spreads sideways underground and adjacent wet zones merge. On free-draining sandy soil, close that to 20–25 cm; water travels down faster than it travels out. For pots, ignore spacing rules and give each pot its own dripper, with a second one in anything above 15 litres. A typical 2 litres-per-hour dripper running 20 minutes morning and evening delivers about 1.3 litres a day, close to what a fruiting tomato wants in mixed British weather.

Run length barely constrains a greenhouse. Most kits state a ceiling of a few dozen drippers per line, and even a 10 × 40 ft house rarely needs more than 40. The number that does matter is pressure. Mains water arrives at 2–4 bar, so mains kits include a pressure reducer to bring it down to the roughly 1 bar drippers are built for. Gravity feed obeys different rules: each metre of height gives about 0.1 bar, so a butt on a 1-metre stand supplies one-tenth of what a mains dripper expects. Buy a kit rated for gravity feed, keep the pipe runs level, and site the butt as high as you safely can.

Set the whole thing running early in the morning. Foliage dries during the day, and compost watered at 7am holds moisture through the afternoon peak instead of releasing it into the evening air.

How capillary matting works

Capillary matting is a synthetic felt that holds water in its fibres and gives it up on contact. One end sits in a reservoir, a gutter section or a tray of water. The mat wicks the water sideways, and each pot standing on it pulls moisture up through its drainage holes as the compost dries. The pot only takes what it has lost, so the system self-regulates in a way drippers never quite manage.

Set-up takes ten minutes. Lay plastic sheeting on a level bench, roll the mat over it, drop one edge into the reservoir, then stand the pots on top with a slight press-and-twist so compost meets mat through the holes. Skip crocks in the bottom of the pots; anything blocking the drainage holes breaks the wick.

The limits are physical. Capillary action lifts water only a few centimetres, so the top of any pot taller than about 15 cm stays dry, and a thirsty plant in a 30 cm pot will wilt on a soaked mat. Matting suits seed trays, plug pots and anything up to around 2 litres, which makes it a propagation-bench tool rather than a whole-house answer. It also grows algae by midsummer; wash the mat with the season, or budget for a fresh roll each spring at typically £10–20.

Rainwater harvesting: the honest maths

England averaged 870 mm of rain a year across 1991–2020, and the UK as a whole 1,163 mm, according to the Met Office HadUK-Grid series. Rain arrives unmetered, and the roof is already the collector. The question worth doing sums on: how much of it can a butt actually hold for you?

Roof plan area times rainfall gives the ceiling. Sizing the water butt

Size storage against two numbers: a fortnight of peak summer demand, and one decent rain event. Ten fruiting tomato plants need roughly 100 litres a week in July, so a fortnight's buffer means 200 litres or more. From the other direction, a 15 mm storm gives a 13 m² roof about 200 litres to offer, and a butt smaller than that wastes the very rain you waited three weeks for. A standard 210-litre butt (typically £40–60, plus £15–30 for stand and diverter) matches both numbers for the SteelRoot footprint above. For an 8 × 6 house, a 100-litre slimline from about £30 holds a 22 mm event and still buys you ten days of autonomy.

Refill reality favours storage over collection. A typical English summer month brings about 70 mm, which is 900-odd litres onto that 13 m² roof, yet the rain arrives in clumps with dry weeks between. The butt earns its money in the gaps. In the wettest parts of the country the sums change completely: observation sites in Snowdonia, the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands record more than 4 metres of rain a year, and there a small butt refills faster than any greenhouse can empty it.

Two housekeeping points. Keep a lid on the butt, to block the light that feeds algae and keep debris out. And collecting rain from your own roof in England needs no abstraction licence; the Environment Agency's rainwater harvesting position allows it outright, and licences only enter the picture above 20,000 litres a day, a volume no garden will ever approach.

Timers: mechanical, battery or smart, and the rules at the tap

A timer turns a drip line from a chore into a system. Three types dominate UK garden centres. Mechanical dial timers (typically £10–15) work like a kitchen egg timer: twist to 30 minutes, walk away, and the valve closes itself, though you must start every session by hand. Battery timers (typically from £20) run a programme, two waterings a day at set lengths, off a pair of AA batteries that last a season. App-controlled units exist from about £40 upwards and add remote tweaking from holiday, at the price of pairing hassle and another point of failure.

Whatever you fit, the connection to the mains has rules attached. The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 require backflow protection on garden fittings, so that water standing in a warm hose can never siphon back into the drinking supply. The usual remedy, a double check valve, comes built into most outside taps installed since 1999; screw-on versions cost a few pounds if yours predates that. A drip line lying at soil level counts as a higher contamination risk than a hand-held hose, so keep the check valve in place and ask your water company if in doubt. Butt-fed systems sidestep all of this, and they also keep running through hosepipe restrictions, which apply to mains-fed hoses; stored rainwater stays yours to use, though read your supplier's exact wording when a ban lands.

Winter care for a watering system

Water expands by about 9 per cent when it freezes, and the residue left in a drip line will split connectors and crack dripper bodies over one hard night. Before the first frost, open the line's end stop, let it drain downhill, and blow through short runs if you can. Unscrew the timer, pull its batteries and store it indoors; LCD screens and solenoid valves both age badly in a frozen shed. Matting comes off the bench at the same time, either for a wash in a 10 per cent disinfectant solution or straight into the bin once algae has taken hold.

The butt stays outside with the lid on; a full butt rides out frost better than a quarter-full one, since the mass of water buffers the swing. Clear the gutter of leaves in November, before the first storm sends the lot into the diverter.

Winter watering itself shrinks to almost nothing: overwintering plants in an unheated house may want a drink every 10–14 days, always in the morning so foliage and floor dry before the cold evening.
