What is in the wood-fired barrel sauna kit?
A timber crate with the whole barrel inside, and the stove on a pallet of its own. The price covers every line of this list, the stove and flue kit and mainland delivery.
The barrel crate, on its pallets
Wrapped and strapped before it leaves. We ask for a photograph of your own crate with its packing list and pass it on to you.
When it arrives: before you sign, check the crate for visible damage and note it on the delivery note. Check the parts against the packing list when you unpack.

The barrel
87 wall boards, 2350 mm4 end-wall panels3 base cradlesfloor panels, 35 mm
Solid timber, cut to size and numbered to the drawings. The three cradles go down first, level and square; the barrel goes up on them board by board between the end-wall panels. It arrives untreated.
What it is
The whole body of the sauna: walls and roof in one round shell, the end walls, the base and the floor.
You do
Build it board by board, following the numbers. Treat the outside before the first winter.
Good to know
The wall boards are 2.35 m long and the end-wall panels nearly as wide as the barrel: check your gate before delivery.
Toughened glass door
1 door in its frametimber handlehingesroller catch
8 mm toughened glass, 1770 × 690 mm, opening outward onto the porch. It comes in its frame, with a turned timber handle through the glass, the hinges and a roller catch that holds it shut. There is no key lock.
What it is
The way in, from the porch.
You do
Fit it near the end of the build, once the walls are up.
Options
A black frame, or a black frame with matt glass, in the build.
One bench along each side, at one height, with a backrest on the curved wall above it: four people sit facing each other. A seat goes either side of the door on the porch.
What it is
Seating for four, and two seats outside on the porch.
You do
Fit the bench frames and both benches once the walls are up, as the manual draws them.
Good to know
Alder is the traditional bench timber: comfortable to sit on at sauna temperature.
Wood-burning stove and flue kit
stove and standstone guardheat shieldsflue Ø115, damperflashing 450 × 450 mmrain cap
The stove stands on the back wall behind its guard, stones on top; its firebox passes through the wall and you feed it from outside. The flue kit runs from the stove to the rain cap. Stones for the stove are not in the crate: 20 kg a box.
What it is
The heat: a wood stove with its flue, fed from outside so logs and ash stay out of the hot room.
You do
Fit the stand, shields, stove and flue as the manual draws them, and seal the flashing into the shingles.
Not in the crate
Stones, a non-combustible plate under the stove, high-temperature flue sealant; the Part J sign-off.
71 bitumen shingles
71 shingles527 roof nails2 starter battens
Nailed on in rows over the top of the barrel, from a starter batten 1.4 m up each side. The manual shows the rows and how many nails each shingle takes.
What it is
The covering that keeps rain off the top of the barrel.
You do
Nail the rows on from the battens up, as the manual draws them.
The straps go right round the barrel once the walls are up. Every screw and nail is counted into the crate by size: 527 roof nails and about 620 screws.
What they are
What holds the walls tight as the solid timber settles.
You do
Tighten all three with two spanners about a month after the build, then once a year.
Good to know
Leave room to walk round the barrel and reach them.
Air inlet, extract grille, floor drain
1 adjustable inlet1 extract grille1 grille in the lowest board1 drain plate
The inlet and the extract grille go in the back wall, and a small grille sits in the lowest board under the floor. The stainless drain plate sits in the floor and empties under the barrel.
What they are
Fresh air for the hot room, and a way out for splashed water.
You do
Leave the door open after a session; keep free drainage under the base.
Good to know
The floor should never sit wet.

How is the wood-fired barrel sauna delivered and built?
Made to order, a crate and a stove pallet to your kerb in 2 to 4 weeks, then two people, ordinary tools and a manual that draws every step.
1Made to order
Your barrel is made to order in about ten days. Before it leaves, we ask for a photograph of your packed crate with its packing list and pass it on to you.
2The day is booked
Our carrier calls to book the day, so that you can be there to check the crate. Order to kerb is typically 2 to 4 weeks on the UK mainland. A few postcodes carry a surcharge: chapter 3 shows yours.
3Set down at the kerb
The crate comes by lorry and is set down at the kerb, on the nearest hard, level standing: driveway or road, not grass, gravel or a slope. The lorry needs room to stop there. The driver does not carry the crate into the garden.
4Check before you sign
Note any damage on the delivery note and take photos, then count the parts against the packing list. Email us within 14 days and we replace damaged or missing parts free of charge, delivery included.
Easy to build yourselves

by building it yourselves: that is what UK sellers charge to assemble a garden sauna like this. The factory allows 8 to 12 hours for two people to build The Barrel Four, with some cutting: the last wall boards are trimmed to fit.
Published fitting prices for garden saunas, September 2026. We do not offer assembly, for any sauna; a local joiner can quote from the manual.

Pad the size of the footprint: 240 × 220 cm, no larger. A slab that sticks out past the wall holds rain against it.
Level and square: the three base cradles go down level, 810 mm apart; measure both diagonals and make them equal.
No water connection, free drainage: no mains water is needed; the floor drain empties under the barrel.
Concrete slab, paving slabs or compacted gravel: whichever you choose, the barrel brings its own floor and base cradles.

Five jobs matter: treat the outside before the first session and leave the inside untreated, look the shingles over once a year, tighten the straps a month after the build and then once a year, after each session leave the door ajar and the vent open until the room is dry, and have the flue swept at least once a year. If it is rarely used, air it on a dry day every few weeks.
Tap a numberClick a number
What keeps water out
71 shingles over the top of the barrel.
What you do
Nail them on during the build, then check them yearly.
1 / 2
Will rain get in?
Bitumen shingles, nailed on in rows over the top of the barrel.
You nail them on during the build; the manual shows the rows and the nails. Look them over once a year and fix down any shingle that has lifted. Damp inside after a session is condensation from the steam: leave the door and the vent open until the room is dry.
Parts for ten years
We keep replacement parts for 10 years from your purchase date: a board, a fitting, a panel.
How long will it last?
We do not put a number of years on it. The written warranty is 2 years; the rest is the five jobs above: treat, tighten, check the roof, dry, sweep. The boards swell in wet weather and shrink in dry, which is why the straps are checked every year; if a board or a fitting fails, we send the part.
?FAQ
Wood-fired barrel sauna questions
Pick a subject, or type it.
Is four people realistic?
⌄
Yes, seated. Two on each bench, facing each other across the aisle, with the stove on the back wall between them. Each bench is 174 cm long and 50 cm deep, at one height, with a backrest on the curved wall. The porch seats outside are for cooling off between rounds.
Do I need planning permission?
⌄
Garden buildings are usually permitted development in England and Wales; this barrel covers 5.3 m² and stands under 2.5 m tall. Height, distance to a boundary, conservation areas, listed settings, flats, Scotland and Northern Ireland all change the answer. Check the Planning Portal and your council before you order.
Should I tell my home insurer?
⌄
Yes, before delivery. Ask your insurer whether your policy covers the sauna and its stove, and which installation documents they need. A garden building of this value can sit above the outbuildings limit on a standard policy.
Where in the garden should it go?
⌄
Close to the house: you walk back from it in a towel. Face the glass door and the porch to the fence or the house, not the street; the matt-glass door option shows less of the room. Leave room to walk round it and to reach the straps. The stove is fed from the back of the barrel, so leave standing room there and a covered log store nearby.
Can I use it through a British winter?
⌄
Yes. It is an outdoor sauna. The two jobs that matter first are the exterior treatment before the first season and the strap check after the first month. Keep the logs dry and the chimney swept.
What does the stove burn?
⌄
Dry, seasoned logs up to 400 mm, fed from outside through the fire door in the back wall. Keep a covered log store near the barrel. The stove needs no heater circuit.
Can I burn wood at my address?
⌄
Councils declare smoke control areas street by street, and this stove is not on Defra’s exempt-appliance register. Put your postcode in at the top of the Site and planning chapter: we tell you which council decides, then check the exact address with them before anything is built.
Who signs off the stove and flue?
⌄
Fitting them is building work under Part J in England and Wales: notify building control, or use an installer registered with a competent-person scheme. The manual gives the clearances, the heat shields and the roof pass-through.
Do I need any electrical work?
⌄
Not for the heat. The only reason to bring power to the barrel is the lighting kit, a small circuit rather than a heater supply; if you add it, it is yours to arrange with a qualified electrician.
What does delivery cost?
⌄
Kerbside delivery to the UK mainland is in the price. The Isle of Wight is +£49, the Scottish Highlands +£79, Northern Ireland +£99 and the Scottish islands +£149, shown by postcode before checkout. For the Isle of Man, contact us before ordering; the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and BFPO addresses are not served.
Does it need a water supply?
⌄
No. There is no water connection: you bring a pail of water in for the stones. Water that reaches the floor drains through it beneath the barrel, so the base needs free drainage.
What exactly is it made of?
⌄
Solid timber boards for the round walls and the end walls, alder benches, an 8 mm toughened glass door. No glued sandwich panels and no PIR boards anywhere in the build. It ships untreated: the exterior finish is yours to choose.
What about children and the stove?
⌄
Keep children away from the stove and its glass door, and do not leave them alone in the hot room.
Is a sauna safe for everyone?
⌄
We sell the sauna and do not give medical advice. If anyone in the household is pregnant or has a heart or blood-pressure condition, ask a GP before using any sauna.
Can I take it with me if I move house?
⌄
It is designed to be built once. Taking it down and rebuilding it is not provided for, so plan the site as permanent.
Electric or wood-fired?
⌄
Same barrel. Wood-fired needs no heater circuit, but does need a flue through the roof, is fed from outside the barrel and cannot burn wood in a Smoke Control Area: the stove is not on Defra’s exempt-appliance list, so check your address with your council first. Electric heats on a timer and needs its own circuit from your consumer unit. If the flue or the smoke check is the sticking point, look at the electric build.
What if it arrives damaged or short?
⌄
Check the delivery before the driver leaves. Note any damage on the delivery note and take photos, then email us within 14 days of delivery with the photos and your order number. We replace damaged or missing parts free of charge, delivery included.
Can I send it back?
⌄
Yes. You have 14 days from delivery to cancel and a further 14 days to send it back, unused and in its crate. Return is by pallet freight, which you arrange and pay for: typically £150 to £250 from a UK mainland address. Faulty or damaged goods are a different case: tell us and we arrange and pay for everything.
Will we actually use it?
⌄
The honest risk with any sauna is the habit, not the build. Size for the people who will use it every week: a four-person room suits a family, or friends who come round. If you have never kept a sauna habit, try a month at a local gym first.
Who am I buying from?
⌄
Waldenhaus Limited, 71-75 Shelton Street, London WC2H 9JQ, Company No. 16877766. We sell garden structures for British weather: greenhouses first, and now saunas made to our specification.
What are my legal rights?
⌄
The Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies: goods must be as described, of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose. Distance orders carry a 14-day cancellation right under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. These come from the law, whoever you buy from.
