The build — examined

Seven decisions in the build — from anchor to apex.

  1. Forty-five by forty-five.DETAIL — 45 × 45 MM CROSS-SECTION
    01

    Cross-section

    Forty-five by forty-five.

Cheap aluminium walls are only 1–2 mm thick. Most wooden competitors use 35 × 35 mm pine or smaller.

NORDIC frame is 45 × 45 mm Swedish pine from sustainably-managed forests — the largest cross-section you'll find in this price range. Bigger timber means it doesn't twist or bend in the wind.

  2. Galvanised steel at every joint.DETAIL — STEEL × NODE
    02

    Node reinforcement

    Galvanised steel at every joint.

A 1.2 mm steel bracket at every joint — not just the corners, where most timber greenhouses stop.

Wood absorbs vibration. Steel holds the shape. Together the frame stays square — instead of leaning into the wind by year three.

1.2 mm galvanised steel — every joint

  3. Screw-fixed polycarbonate panels — Waldenhaus NORDIC greenhouse, no W-clips DETAIL — SCREW + WASHER
    03

    Glazing fixing

Screw + washer at every panel edge.

Most cheap greenhouses use spring clips to hold the glass or polycarbonate. Clips rust within a winter or two. Then the panels lift in the first proper storm.

We use a galvanised screw and washer at every panel edge. They don't go anywhere. Ever.

    Anti-Blowout — galvanised hardware

  4. Screw-fixed polycarbonate panels at every edge — Waldenhaus NORDIC leak-proof greenhouse construction DETAIL — RAIN × SEAM
    04

    Sealed joints

Rain stays out — at every seam.

Wooden greenhouses earn a quiet reputation for leaks at year three — once the timber moves and the panel seal gives way.

NORDIC's screw + washer holds panel against frame at every edge; the apex geometry sheds water laterally, not into the seam. Dry potting bench at the first proper downpour, and at the tenth.

Sealed joints · screw + washer at every edge

  5. Heavy-duty anchors. Hand-driven.DETAIL — ANCHOR × GROUND
    05

    Foundation

    Heavy-duty anchors. Hand-driven.

Heavy-duty ground anchors hammer straight into the soil. No concrete pad to mix and pour, no skip hire, no setting time.

Most greenhouse warranties require a concrete base — and most owners never pour one. We removed the condition entirely.

    No concrete required

  6. Stand up. Walk through. Reach the apex.DETAIL — RIDGE 2.3 M
    06

    Working height

Stand up. Walk through. Reach the apex.

2.3 m at the ridge — taller than the doorframe in most British kitchens. Walk in, stand at the centre bed, prune tomato vines from the apex without ducking.

Most aluminium 8×6 ft greenhouses cap at 1.9 m. Their owners learn to crouch. NORDIC was sized for the gardener who's in it for the work, not the photo.

    2.3 m ridge · 1.51 m eaves · 2.6 m floor

Frequently asked

Will it survive a real British storm?

NORDIC is engineered for British winter conditions, not protected from them. The frame is 45 × 45 mm pine from sustainably-managed forests with 1.2 mm galvanised steel angle brackets at every node — not only the four corners. CrystalLight 4 mm twin-wall polycarbonate is screw-fixed at every panel edge with EPDM-style washers, so panels stay where they were fitted instead of springing out under flex. Galvanised ground anchors are included and are required for the warranty to remain valid.

The warranty has no "extreme weather" exclusion. Damage caused by wind gusts above 50 mph during a Met Office Named Storm sits outside cover — that threshold is published, not buried. Full terms on our warranty page.

How long does NORDIC take two adults to build?

Most owners build over one weekend. Realistic times, working at a comfortable pace with breaks:

NORDIC-S 8–12 h · NORDIC-M 10–14 h · NORDIC-L 12–16 h · NORDIC-XL 14–18 h · NORDIC-XXL 16–20 h.

Panels arrive numbered, pre-drilled and grouped by build stage. You'll need a cordless drill, a spanner set, a spirit level and a tape measure. A step-ladder is useful on L, XL and XXL. No concrete, no specialist tools, no second mortgage on a builder. If you get stuck, our build-support line is open weekday and Saturday mornings during the install season.

Do I need a concrete pad or special foundation?

No concrete pad is required. Galvanised ground anchors are included with every NORDIC and hammer into prepared ground, paving or wooden decking. Anchoring is required for the 10-year frame warranty to remain in force — leaving the structure un-anchored is a warranty exclusion.

NORDIC sits well on a level lawn, an existing slab patio, or sound wooden decking. Loose sand or peat may need supplementary anchors; a tilted plot above roughly five degrees should be levelled first. If your ground is unusual, email support@waldenhaus.uk with a photo before ordering — we'll tell you what'll actually work.

Won't the timber rot in a few years?

Swedish pine from sustainably-managed forests, factory pressure-treated to UC3-equivalent standard before despatch (not surface-coated — pressure-impregnated, the same treatment used on agricultural gates). Frame mass runs 95–230 kg packed depending on SKU.

The 10-year anti-rot frame warranty is conditional on re-treating the timber every 2 years with any UK-purchased wood preservative — Cuprinol, Sadolin, Ronseal, supermarket own-brand, whatever's on the shelf. Half a day's work each visit. We send a reminder when you're due. Skip the schedule and the cover lapses, but the structure rarely fails in that window — re-treatment is precaution, not a rescue.

Won't the polycarbonate yellow and go cloudy?

CrystalLight 4 mm twin-wall polycarbonate carries a one-sided, co-extruded UV-protective layer on the sun-facing side. Approximately 90% light transmission at install. The UV layer is integral to the sheet, not a sprayed coating that wears off.

The polycarbonate panels are covered against manufacturer defects for 2 years from delivery — full terms on our warranty page. Beyond that, replacement panels are sold cut-to-size by our customer-service team; the panels are standard 4 mm twin-wall polycarbonate, not a bespoke part you'd struggle to source.

Can I paint the frame, and will it void the warranty?

Yes — paint to any exterior colour. Sage green, charcoal, cream, Hague blue, whatever your garden's vocabulary wants. Most owners paint at the end of the first growing season once the timber has settled.

Paint on top of the wood preservative, or use a preservative-tinted base coat with paint over it. Both work. The 10-year frame warranty holds as long as the timber receives preservative re-treatment every 2 years — under or over the paint. The paint film alone is not classed as preservative, so don't skip the underlying treatment step.

How do I clean the polycarbonate panels?

Warm water, a drop of washing-up liquid, a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents and pressure washers — they damage the EPDM washers and can scratch the panel surface. Two cleans a year is plenty for most gardens: late autumn after leaf fall, and early spring before serious propagation starts.

Algae on the cellular flutes shows up as a green tinge along the edges in damp seasons. A diluted horticultural cleaner (Citrox or similar, off the shelf at any garden centre) lifts it without harming the polycarbonate.

Which size should I order — and is M really the most popular?

NORDIC-M (7.8 m² internal floor area) is the most-ordered size by some distance — roughly the working area of a small allotment plot, room for 4–6 tomato plants plus seed-starting bench. Garden footprints under 50 m² usually land on S or M; 50–150 m² on M or L; over 150 m² on L, XL or XXL.

The single most consistent post-purchase comment across UK greenhouse communities is "I wish I'd gone bigger." If you're between two sizes, take the larger. The £100 step between SKUs is small money against a year of growing-space regret. The full ladder: S 5.2 m² → M 7.8 m² → L 10.4 m² → XL 13.0 m² → XXL 15.6 m².

Do I need planning permission for NORDIC?

For most UK gardens, no. NORDIC's ridge height is 2.30 m across every SKU — comfortably under the 2.5 m UK Permitted Development cap for outbuildings. Eaves height is 1.51 m, which also sits inside the tighter near-boundary rules.

Three situations where you should ring your council before ordering: a listed property, a designated conservation area, or a plot under an Article 4 Direction (mostly urban conservation zones). Allotment sites typically allow timber-frame greenhouses where they ban polytunnels — but check your tenancy. A plain-language Permitted Development guide ships in your welcome pack.

How does delivery work and how long does it take?

3-4 weeks from order for UK mainland. We confirm a 4-hour delivery window the day before; the pallet arrives on a tail-lift truck, dropped kerbside. NORDIC pallets are 120 × 80 × 150 cm (Euro-pallet format) and weigh 95–230 kg depending on SKU. Plan one or two people to move components from the kerb to the build location.

UK mainland delivery is included in the price. Scottish Highlands, the islands and Northern Ireland have surcharges or limited service — calculated at checkout, or email us before ordering for a tailored quote. Full carrier terms on our shipping policy.

What if a panel or component arrives damaged?

Photograph the damaged part and the pallet packaging within 48 hours of delivery, then email support@waldenhaus.uk with your order number. We ship replacement components at no charge — no forms, no proof-of-handling-fault arguments. We hold spares in the UK rather than re-ordering from Europe each time, so most replacement parts despatch inside 14 working days.

If a panel chips during build because something went wrong on your end, we'll still sell you a replacement at customer-service rate (well below full retail). Either way, send a photo first — it's faster than a phone description.

Can I return NORDIC if it's not right for my garden?

You have 14 days from delivery to start a return — unused, in original packaging. We arrange the collection through our carrier. Full terms on our refund policy.

If the greenhouse has been built and used, the 14-day return window doesn't apply, but our customer-service team can usually help — repositioning advice, a partial component swap, sometimes a buy-back at a depreciated rate if the structure has to come down. Honest conversation beats a stand-off; we'd rather sort it than have a 1-star review.

Will I be able to get spare parts in 5 or 10 years?

NORDIC is built largely from standard hardware. The CrystalLight panels are 4 mm twin-wall polycarbonate, the brackets are 1.2 mm galvanised steel, the fixings are commodity stainless or zinc-plated machine screws with EPDM-style washers. Replacement parts go through our customer-service team — at customer-service rate, not full retail.

Waldenhaus is a multi-product UK brand, not a single-line operation that can vanish. If we ever change a component spec, we'll keep the previous version stocked for owners on the older configuration. No 8-year-old greenhouse should be orphaned because the supplier moved on.

Won't it overheat in summer?

Manual roof vents are included as standard — 1 vent on S and M, 2 vents on L, XL and XXL. The optional SmartVent auto-opener (sold separately) uses a wax-piston mechanism that opens around 22°C and closes around 18°C, with no electricity required, so the structure ventilates itself while you're at work.

For very hot weeks in July and August, the realistic kit is: open vents and doors at sunrise, a shading kit or whitewash if the plot bakes from the south, and a watering can or drip line for floor evaporation. Twin-wall polycarbonate holds heat well in winter and releases it more steadily than single-pane glass; in summer it's still a sun-trap if you ignore it — same as every other greenhouse on Earth.

Why pay this much instead of buying a £350 aluminium greenhouse from B&Q?

Different category. Entry-tier aluminium polycarbonate kits at £170–£800 use thin extrusion that twists in moderate UK wind, spring W-clip glazing that pops out before the first winter, and warranties that exclude "extreme weather" in the small print. Trustpilot is full of customers who lost budget twin-wall kits in the £400-900 bracket during named UK storms.

NORDIC's 45 × 45 mm pine frame, 1.2 mm galvanised steel brackets at every node, screw-fixed glazing and included ground anchors are engineered to outlast three replacement cycles of the cheap-aluminium tier. You're paying once instead of three times — and not waking up to find your seedlings on the neighbour's lawn.
